I've started logging my roof sessions with the date, the time and the traffic. The traffic is a surprisingly good instrument. Four months in, the quietest hour is 2:14 a.m., and I've decided the album will be recorded then.

The thing I tell every singer in the first session: don't perform the song for the microphone. Sing it for the person at the back of the room you'd like to impress, then forget them. The take is almost always in the second minute.
