Puddles in the phrase
We rehearsed in the courtyard after the rain. The puddles are part of the set now, and so is the dog who keeps walking through the middle of the phrase.

A piece for six dancers, made in a hall above the market in Dakar over six weeks of afternoons. The company wanted the floor to be part of the work, so the rehearsals took place outdoors when the rain allowed.
The phrase has puddles in it now. The dancers adjusted the movement to the wet ground and the reflections, and the lighting came from the sky and the window rather than from a rig.
The premiere is at the festival in March. This project collects the rehearsal material, the courtyard studies and the solo for the company's youngest dancer, which is being taken on by her for the tour.

The courtyard after the rain, a low camera and feet in the puddles. The dancers wanted the floor to be part of the phrase, so the phrase has puddles in it now.

Arms in slow motion under the window light. This is from the solo I made for the youngest dancer in the company. She takes it to the festival in March.

Unison in the hall above the market. The long shadows are our stage lights for the afternoon sessions. We don't get a lighting designer until the premiere.

Six weeks of afternoons in a hall above the market. Every piece in this company is made with the dancers, not for them. This is what that looks like on a Tuesday.
